Despiera Corazónes Dormidos (Wake up Sleeping Hearts)is an art piece I created for an art exhibit in July 2007 commemorating the 100 year anniversary of Frida Kahlo. At that time, I was conducting a Free Arts Weekly Volunteer Program on Printmaking at Star View Adolescent Center. I was inspired by the girls’ recurring theme of hearts in their art work. Using the same heart symbol for my piece, I tried to invoke the spirit of hope and new beginnings as they had. To convey that - the layers of corn husks are slowly unraveling to expose the sculpted clay hearts that represent these young ladies as they began to slowly trust and take a chance with me while opening their hearts to new possibilities and experiences. Despiera Corazónes Dormidos is a tribute to the girls at Star View Adolescent Center.
